You’re right to be suspicious of these “practice builder admonitions.” Singular statements like these are too often holdovers of dogma from someone lacking in imagination and puffed up with their own self certainty.
Worse, the frequent failure of following these simplisitic practice building rules fills many an accountant with self-doubt and dread, when they recognize that the stated or implied “should” in each of these types of statements is a parent word limiting their growth and vision. After such a statement, many people conclude one of the following:
- “I’d better do this thing that I hate and am not good at.”
- “What’s wrong with me? I really, really, really don’t believe this advice.”
- “I’ll never succeed without their help.”
All of this is hogwash, of course.
Their is only one person whose advide you need to follow, and that is you. You are the only person who knows what capabilities you have, whether they be inate or extrinsic. You are the only one who has the ability to define the business model that best fits with those capabilities. And, you are the only one who can select the unique strategy and tactics that will fit your model and your capabilities.
